Born in Leicester 1923
Died Leicester 2002

Known as Les.

Normandy Veteran. Landed on Pegasus Bridge during Operation Market Garden and never claimed a penny from the state in his entire life. That was his legacy.

A dry wit, crafty nature, and old moaner. I've never known anybody moan so much in my life. We called him 'Victor Meldrew'. The film was never to his satisfaction, if it was a war film he would switch it off if there was a female in it (!) saying it ruined the film. "Why don't they put a John Wayne film on?" Then to add insult to injury his lottery numbers wouldn't come up.
Yes, he could moan for England, but I still miss him like crazy.
We went through a lot nursing my mother. Him tending her like a baby and me doing all the personal things.
He lost his will to live when she passed away, but agreed with me that it was a blessing at the end.
Three weeks after mum's death he found out he had lung cancer and I had to start again. 11 months after my mum died he joined her just 3 days before their 55th wedding anniversary. I looked after him all the way, but sadly missed his passing as he lay down on his bed in hospital at 1.55 and by 2.00 he was gone.
I think the four hours I had to wait to see you dad, were the longest hours I have ever spent.

I wish you could see how things have turned out. I don't think you would believe it.

Miss you so much 'Victor'.

My love,

Frances

Through veils of peace may you ascend
To promised planes above
Where comfort shall await you
In those summerlands of love.

Although my grief is deep and raw
Although my pain is great
I know that you are still with me
I know that you will wait.

For in God's time we'll meet again
Of this I am quite sure
I loved you so much on this earth
In absence even more.
